Caribbean Premier League "Roots" Trophy
The Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LPCL) commissioned Bennett Awards to create a new custom perpetual trophy for its inaugural T20 season tournament. The LCPL is a new professional cricket league based in the Caribbean. The league consists of six teams: Antigua Hawkballs, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Jamaica Tallawahs, Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel, and St. Lucia Zouks. This season’s competition began July 31, 2013, and will culminate with a championship match on August 24, 2013. The inaugural season will be comprised of 24 matches. Nearly $1,000,000 USD will be at stake as the overall prize money pool.
The organizers of this new league commissioned Bennett Awards to create a custom perpetual recognition trophy called the CPL Roots Trophy to recognize each season’s champions. The organizers had a very specific custom design in mind that incorporated hard-carved wood from a mahogany tree, a tree indigenous to the Caribbean. The primary award sculpture consists of a set of hand-carved intertwined roots that echo the form of the West Indian Swamp Blood Tree. These roots gradually transform into 11 upraised arms and hands holding a cricket ball. This trophy design symbolizes the combined struggle and ultimate teamwork needed to achieve greatness. This intricate wood sculpture stands approximately 20” high. The sculpture award is mounted on a 4” circular black marble base, bringing the total award height to 24”. The base includes customized engraving of the CPL T20 logo, and space to add engraved plates each year with the name of that year’s champion.
This custom recognition trophy was unveiled amidst a fireworks display at the league’s gala opening ceremony, held July 30, 2013, at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The unveiling was done by Denis O’Brien, Chairman of Digicel and Owner of the LCPL, and Dave Cameron, President of West Indies Cricket Board.
