Glenholme School "Excelsior" Award
David O. Russell, the Academy Award-nominated director and screenwriter of Silver Linings Playbook, received this custom Bennett award from The Glenholme School in recognition of his efforts in raising society’s awareness of mental health conditions. The Glenholme School is a boarding school located in Washington, Connecticut, that serves students with Asperger’s, ADHD, Tourette’s, OCD, depression, anxiety, and various learning differences.
For this recognition award, The Glenholme School worked closely with Bennett Awards to create a custom sculpture award commemorating Mr. Russell’s personal efforts in championing mental health awareness, and championing the cause of The Glenholme School.
The custom sculpture design was created by The Glenholme School’s Barbara Feeney, and sculpted by Bennett Awards artist Marjorie Coyne. The sculpture features an adult figure carrying a child figure on its back, ascending a long set of stairs that wind upward into a stairwell. The stairs are a combination of 3D sculpted images and bas-relief. The stairs represent the arduous journey those affected by mental health face, and the piggyback figures signify the beneficial support provided by others such as Mr. Russell in helping them move forward with their lives. At the top of the stairwell are the words “EXCELSIOR”, a mantra used by the character portrayed by Bradley Cooper in the movie Silver Linings Playbook that, in Latin, means “ever upward.” The sculpture was cast in pewter, and featured an antique bronze finish. It was mounted on a handcrafted hardwood based with an engraved plate thanking Mr. Russell for his gifts and contributions.
This custom recognition award was presented to Mr. Russell at an annual fund raising event to benefit The Glenholme School’s Scholarship Fund. The event was held October 23, 2013 at the Bryant Park Grill in New York City. More information on this awards presentation can be found at: "The Glenholme School Excelsior Award".
