Bennett Awards Creates Custom Recycled Awards for Gonzaga
The Gonzaga Center for Climate, Society, and the Environment contacted us in early 2022 to help them create a unique award made of recycled materials, to be used as recognition for the winner of the annual Spokane Climate Cup. The idea for the Spokane Climate Cup was proposed and organized by the Gonzaga Center for Climate, Society, and the Environment and begins during Earth Week each year. All Spokane Public high schools are invited to participate in this annual competition, where they complete climate actions to reduce their environmental footprint, vying for the most points and the traveling Climate Cup award.
With their initial inquiry, Gonzaga had a few desired outcomes for their Climate Cup. They knew that they wanted:
a custom wood award
an area allotted for metal plaques indicating an annual winner
an etched logo
eco-friendly sourcing and production
free-standing design
With these goals in mind, we began by offering Gonzaga many recycled wood options for their award. Ultimately, they chose a reclaimed Douglas Fir wood, salvaged from an older, demolished home for their final award. After being milled and shaped, the wood was left unstained to illustrate its true life cycle and recycled character. Aluminum was selected as the recyclable material to create the awardee plates. Finally, Gonzaga’s logo was carefully engraved into the 4" x 4" x 12" Douglas Fir pillar.
